Insulation boards and the fixings, beads and accessories that complete an external wall insulation system. The insulant governs the thermal performance of the build-up and the depth required to hit a target U-value, so it is chosen alongside the substrate, the building height and the finish rather than in isolation. Licata supplies EPS, mineral wool and phenolic options together with the mechanical fixings, starter tracks, corner beads, stop beads and mesh needed to detail the system correctly at openings, junctions and terminations.

Insulation boards and accessories for EWI systems
The insulant determines the thermal performance of an external wall insulation system and the build-up depth needed to reach a target U-value. Licata supplies EPS insulation, mineral wool insulation and phenolic insulation alongside the fixings, beads and accessories that complete a system.
Choosing an insulant
Three factors usually decide it: the target U-value, the depth available, and any constraint the project places on the material itself.
EPS is the most widely specified insulant for domestic retrofit. It is lightweight, cost-effective and performs consistently, which makes it the default for large-scale housing programmes where budget and programme both matter.
Mineral wool is specified where a mineral insulant is required, which is common on taller buildings and wherever the specifier has set a mineral-only requirement. It also offers useful acoustic performance, which matters on residential schemes in dense urban settings and near transport corridors.
Phenolic delivers the best thermal performance per millimetre, so it is the answer where a demanding U-value has to be achieved within a restricted depth. Tight boundaries, pavement-edge conditions and situations where the finished wall cannot project beyond a fixed line are the typical cases.
Insulation thickness and U-values
Thickness follows from the target U-value and the existing wall construction, and it is not a decision to estimate. A solid nine-inch brick wall, a cavity wall and a concrete panel all start from different points, and the insulation needed to reach the same target differs accordingly.
We provide U-value calculations for any build-up, confirming the thickness required to meet Building Regulations, a funding requirement under the Warm Homes Plan, or a project-specific performance target.
Fixings and accessories
A system is only as good as its detailing, and the accessories are what make the details work. Boards are adhesive-bonded and mechanically fixed, with the fixing pattern set by building height, exposure zone and the weight of the finish above.
- Mechanical fixings selected for the substrate, with the correct embedment depth and pull-out performance
- Starter tracks to set the system out correctly at the base and terminate it above DPC level
- Corner beads to protect external angles and maintain a straight line
- Stop beads and bellcast beads for clean terminations and controlled water shedding
- Reinforcing mesh embedded in the basecoat, with additional patches at opening corners
Reveals, sills, eaves and service penetrations are where systems most often fail, and they are worth drawing before they are priced. Adding 100mm to a wall changes every junction on the elevation.
