Overview

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 supplied for render & EWI systems

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board is a premium performance rigid thermoset insulation, with a fibre-free phenolic core faced on both sides with a glass tissue based facing, autohesively bonded during manufacture. It is designed as an integral component of rendered external wall insulation systems on masonry walls.

With a thermal conductivity as low as 0.021 W/mK, K5 achieves demanding U-values with a thinner insulation thickness than many alternative insulants: valuable where space, reveal depths or planning constraints limit how far a wall can be built out. It is unaffected by air infiltration, resistant to the passage of water vapour, and suitable for use behind both traditional and lightweight polymer-modified renders, making it ideal for new build and refurbishment alike.

As a Kingspan stockist, we supply Kingspan Kooltherm K5 as the insulation layer within complete external wall insulation systems and render systems, combining the board with the basecoat, fibreglass mesh and silicone or acrylic render finish needed for a durable, weatherproof facade. Buy Kingspan K5 from any of our six UK branches, with technical and specification support from our team.

Features & Benefits

Why specify Kooltherm K5?

Premium Thermal Performance

Thermal conductivity as low as 0.021 W/mK, with high performance achieved in a thinner board than most other insulation materials.

Thinner Build-Up

Achieves target U-values at reduced thickness, valuable where reveal depths, space or planning limit how far the wall can extend.

Rigid Thermoset Phenolic

A premium performance rigid thermoset, fibre-free phenolic insulant core with glass tissue facings bonded both sides.

Unaffected by Air Infiltration

Thermal performance is not degraded by air movement through the construction.

Water Vapour Resistant

Resistant to the passage of water vapour, supporting moisture control within the wall build-up.

New Build & Refurbishment

Suitable for use behind traditional and lightweight polymer-modified renders on both new build and refurbishment projects.

Resistant to Mould & Vermin

The core and facings resist attack by mould and microbial growth and provide no food value to vermin.

Quality Assured

Manufactured under management systems certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001 and ISO 37301, and used as an integral component of several BBA / NSAI Agrement certified rendered EWI systems.

Installation

How Kooltherm K5 is installed

K5 is mechanically fixed to the exterior of masonry walls as part of a proprietary insulated render system. Because render systems differ, always follow the render system manufacturer's accredited installation guidance.

The masonry wall should be clean, flat and free from protrusions, with a bedding compound applied where the surface is uneven.

1
Prepare the wall. Ensure the masonry is clean, flat and free from protrusions. Apply a bedding compound to even out uneven surfaces.
2
Fix the boards. Install break-bonded with joints lightly butted, restrained with bedding compound / adhesive and mechanical fixings, preferably thermally broken telescopic tube fasteners.
3
Mechanically fix. A minimum of 5 fixings per board; board edges at openings and corners fixed at max 300mm centres, 50–150mm from edges.
4
Apply the render system. Base render in two coats with reinforcement mesh between, then the finish coat. Minimum 8mm average total render thickness, per the system supplier's guidance.

Fire performance & building height

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 achieves Euroclass C-s2,d0 when classified to EN 13501-1. As a combustible insulant, there are potential restrictions on its use that vary depending on building type, height, construction and location. For buildings over 11 metres and other regulated cases, refer to current Building Regulations guidance and confirm the fire strategy and system-level certification with our technical team and the render system manufacturer before specifying.

Common Questions

Kooltherm K5 FAQs

What is Kingspan Kooltherm K5?
Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board is a premium performance rigid thermoset phenolic insulation board, designed for use as part of rendered external wall insulation systems on masonry walls. It has a thermal conductivity as low as 0.021 W/mK.
Why is phenolic insulation a thinner option?
Phenolic insulation has a very low thermal conductivity (0.021 W/mK), so it achieves the same U-value as many other insulants at a reduced thickness. This is useful where reveal depths, available space or planning constraints limit how far the wall can be built out.
What is the fire classification of K5?
Kooltherm K5 achieves Euroclass C-s2,d0 to EN 13501-1. As a combustible insulant, its use is subject to restrictions depending on building type, height, construction and location. Always confirm the fire strategy and system-level certification with our technical team for your specific project.
Can K5 be used on both new build and refurbishment?
Yes. K5 is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects, used behind traditional and lightweight polymer-modified render systems on masonry walls.
What board sizes are available?
The standard board size is 1200 x 600mm. Insulant thicknesses vary. Refer to your local distributor or contact our team for current stock and non-stock sizes.
Where can I buy Kingspan Kooltherm K5?
