Layer-by-layer system specification

This is Licata's EWI system for masonry substrates using mineral wool insulation and a silicone render finish. Mineral wool offers non-combustibility advantages over EPS, making it the preferred insulation choice on projects with more stringent fire performance requirements. Licata supplies the complete system from a single source.

Raso Top 800 is used as both the insulation adhesive and the reinforced basecoat. Isolante LG primer and Siloxan Color silicone render complete the system, delivering a water-repellent, breathable, anti-mould decorative finish.

System Layers

Products

Layer 1: Substrate

Brick or Block Masonry

Existing or new masonry substrate in brick or block. Must be structurally sound, clean and free from contamination, organic growth, loose render or paint. Any defects or voids in the masonry should be repaired before insulation is fixed.

Layer 2: Insulation Adhesive

Raso Top 800

Polymer-modified cementitious adhesive, applied to the rear of the mineral wool board using the dot-and-dab or full-bed method to bond the insulation to the masonry substrate. Achieves the high adhesion values required for EWI systems in exposed conditions.

Layer 3: Insulation

Mineral Wool Insulation Board

Non-combustible mineral wool insulation boards, thickness specified by U-value calculation. Fixed to the masonry using Raso Top 800 adhesive and mechanically secured with EWI fixings. Boards staggered at joints and tightly butted with no gaps. Preferred over EPS where enhanced fire performance is required.

Layer 4: Mechanical Fix

Insulation Fixing

Mechanical EWI fixings, installed through the insulation board into the masonry substrate. Fixing type and density determined by pull-out testing and wind load calculations for the project. Fixings must be flush with or counter-sunk below the board face.

Layer 5: Basecoat

Raso Top 800

Polymer-modified basecoat, applied over the insulation boards in two passes to encapsulate the fibreglass mesh reinforcement. The first pass embeds the mesh, the second pass covers it fully. Minimum total thickness 4 to 6mm. Allow to cure fully before priming.

Layer 6: Reinforcement

Fibreglass Mesh

Alkali-resistant fibreglass reinforcement mesh, embedded into the first pass of Raso Top 800 basecoat. Laps must be a minimum of 100mm at all joints. Additional mesh should be applied diagonally at all openings to prevent corner cracking.

Layer 7: Primer

Isolante LG

Silicone-based top coat primer, applied over the fully cured Raso Top 800 basecoat to consolidate the surface and provide uniform, controlled absorption for the silicone render finish. Available in white and tintable to match the render colour.

Layer 8: Render Finish

Siloxan Color

Silicone render finish, applied over the Isolante LG primer in one or two coats. Highly water-repellent with excellent vapour permeability, anti-mould and algae-resistant additives and low dirt pick-up. Available in a wide colour range.

Benefits of Masonry Mineral Wool Silicone Render

Non-Combustible Insulation

Mineral wool is non-combustible, providing enhanced fire performance compared to EPS systems and meeting the requirements of projects where A2 or better reaction to fire classification is specified.

Weather Resistance

Siloxan Color silicone render provides a highly water-repellent exterior surface, keeping the wall dry and protecting the insulation and substrate from rain penetration.

Breathable System

The silicone render finish maintains high vapour permeability throughout, allowing moisture to escape from the wall whilst preventing liquid water ingress.

Single Source Supply

Licata supplies the complete system of insulation, fixings, mesh, adhesive, basecoat, primer and render, simplifying procurement and ensuring full system compatibility.

This system has been assessed and certified. The certification number, fire classification and impact resistance category are declared for the complete system as installed. U-value calculations are produced on a project-specific basis.

Fire performance is classified to BS EN 13501-1. The system achieves Use Category I impact resistance classification, indicating suitability for areas readily accessible at ground level and exposed to normal hard-body impacts.
