Layer-by-layer system specification

This is Licata's EWI system for masonry substrates using EPS insulation with a clay brick slip finish, delivering the authentic appearance of traditional brickwork with the thermal performance of a modern EWI system. Licata supplies the complete system from a single source.

Raso Top 800 is used as both the insulation adhesive and the reinforced basecoat. Super S1, Licata's S1-rated flexible tile adhesive, bonds the clay brick slips to the prepared basecoat, providing the flexibility required to accommodate thermal movement in the system.

System Layers

Products

1
Layer 1: Substrate
Brick or Block Masonry
Existing or new masonry substrate in brick or block. Must be structurally sound, clean and free from contamination, organic growth, loose render or paint. Any defects or voids should be repaired before insulation is fixed.

Layer 2: Insulation Adhesive
Raso Top 800
Polymer-modified cementitious adhesive, applied to the rear of the EPS board using the dot-and-dab or full-bed method to bond the insulation to the masonry substrate.

Layer 3: Insulation
EPS Insulation Board
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation boards, thickness specified by U-value calculation. Fixed to the masonry using Raso Top 800 adhesive and mechanically secured with EWI fixings. Boards staggered at joints with no gaps.

Layer 4: Mechanical Fix
Insulation Fixing
Mechanical EWI fixings, installed through the insulation board into the masonry substrate. Fixing type and density determined by pull-out testing and wind load calculations. Fixings must be flush with or counter-sunk below the board face.

Layer 5: Basecoat
Raso Top 800
Polymer-modified basecoat, applied over the insulation boards in two passes to encapsulate the fibreglass mesh. First pass embeds the mesh, second pass covers it fully. Minimum total thickness 4 to 6mm. Allow to cure before applying brick slip adhesive.

Layer 6: Reinforcement
Fibreglass Mesh
Alkali-resistant fibreglass reinforcement mesh, embedded into the first pass of Raso Top 800 basecoat. Minimum 100mm laps at all joints. Additional diagonal mesh at all openings to prevent corner cracking.

Layer 7: Brick Slip Adhesive
Super S1
S1-rated highly flexible cementitious tile adhesive, used to bond the clay brick slips to the cured Raso Top 800 basecoat. The S1 deformability classification provides the flexibility required to accommodate thermal movement in the EWI system without cracking or debonding.

Layer 8: Finish
Clay Brick Slips
Clay brick slips are thin brick-faced tiles bonded to the EWI basecoat using Super S1 adhesive. Deliver the authentic appearance of traditional brickwork with a fraction of the weight. Available in a wide range of brick colours and textures. Joints pointed on completion.
