Layer-by-layer system specification

The Ancient Lime Fixing system is Licata's heritage specification for exposed natural stone walls with wide grout joints, commonly found in traditional masonry construction, historic buildings and conservation projects. Unlike the other lime render systems, this is not a render system. It is a consolidation and pointing system that preserves and enhances the natural stone appearance.

Sil Primer is applied first to consolidate the stone surface and reduce uneven absorption. Stil Romana Faccia a Vista, a traditional exposed-face lime mortar, is then used to fill and style the wide grout joints, restoring the integrity and appearance of the stonework. Finally, Hidro Rep provides water-repellent surface protection across the entire face, preserving the mineral finish without altering the natural appearance of the stone.

Layer 1
Exposed Stone with Wide Grout Joints
Natural stone masonry in historic or traditional construction, with wide open joints requiring consolidation and repointing. Remove all loose, friable or poorly bonded existing mortar from the joints before beginning. Stone face should be clean and free from organic growth. Treat with biocide if required.

Layer 2: Consolidation
Sil Primer
Transparent potassium silicate primer, applied across the full stone face to consolidate friable or powdering surfaces and even out absorption before the pointing mortar is applied. Penetrates and bonds chemically with mineral stone substrates through silicatisation. Allow to dry fully before pointing.

Layer 3: Pointing Mortar
Stil Romana Faccia a Vista
Traditional exposed-face lime pointing mortar, formulated for filling and styling wide grout joints in natural stone and heritage masonry. Applied to the open joints and finished to match the character of the existing stonework. Breathable and compatible with natural stone and historic lime mortars.

Layer 4: Water-Repellent Protection
Hidro Rep
Water-repellent lime surface treatment, applied across the full face of the consolidated and pointed stone wall to provide weather protection. Penetrating rather than film-forming, it preserves the natural mineral appearance of the stone whilst repelling liquid water. Maintains full vapour permeability of the masonry.
