Sil Primer is a transparent potassium silicate primer from Licata with high consolidating and penetrating power. Specifically formulated as the bonding bridge before applying Licata Sil or any transpiring mineral decorative coating, it improves adhesion on both smooth and highly absorbent surfaces while preserving the full breathability and water-repellent characteristics of the decorative system. Ready to use, with low VOC content suitable for interior and exterior applications.
Why specify Sil Primer?
Transparent — No Colour Change
Sil Primer is colourless and transparent — it consolidates and penetrates the substrate without altering its appearance, making it ideal as a preparatory coat where visual continuity with the substrate is important before applying the decorative finish.
Potassium Silicate Chemistry
Like Licata Sil, this primer is based on potassium silicates — it chemically consolidates the substrate through a natural silicatisation process, providing a strong, durable bonding bridge for subsequent transpiring mineral coatings.
Fully Breathable — Preserves Transpiration
The high transpiring properties of potassium silicate make this primer fully compatible with breathable decorative systems — it does not create a vapour barrier and maintains the water-repellent and anti-mould characteristics of the full system.
Controls Absorption on Porous Surfaces
Excellent penetrating power limits the absorption of porous and highly absorbent surfaces — ensuring the subsequent Licata Sil or mineral decorative coating is applied to a uniformly primed substrate, improving yield and finish quality.
Bonds to Smooth Surfaces
Creates a bonding bridge even on very smooth walls and ceilings — surfaces that would otherwise present adhesion challenges for mineral topcoats. Universally compatible with the most common construction substrates.
Low VOC — Interior & Exterior
VOC content below 30g/L (Directive 2004/42/EC, Cat A/g) — suitable for occupied buildings, sensitive environments and interior applications where low emissions are required, as well as all exterior façade work.

Sil Primer is Licata's transparent consolidating and penetrating potassium silicate primer — specifically formulated as the bonding bridge before applying Licata Sil or any transpiring mineral decorative coating. It improves adhesion on both smooth and highly absorbent surfaces, limiting uneven absorption that would otherwise compromise the yield and appearance of the finish coat.
The potassium silicate base preserves the complete breathability of the decorative system — maintaining the water-repellent and anti-mould characteristics that make silicate coatings the preferred choice for façade restoration, ETICS finishes and dehumidifying cycles.
Sil Primer is ready to use and requires no dilution. Applied in a single coat by brush, roller or airless spray, it reaches touch-dry in 1–2 hours at 20°C. Its transparency means it can be used on new and existing substrates without visible colour change.
