Thermalite Blocks Render

Products Required

This render system offers a choice of products for the basecoat and decorative finish. Only one product from each section is required to complete the system. If clay brick slips are to be used as the decorative finish, an extra adhesive will be required (Super S1)

Which External Render Finish to Choose?

As we mentioned Licata’s Thermalite Block Render System can be topped off with your choice of brick slips, a coloured render or a resin multi-colour. Each has their own upside and it’s important that you select the right one for your project. Below are the relative merits of each type of decorative finish.

Brick Slip Cladding

Brick slip cladding has become an incredibly popular choice among designers and architects and their clients. Licata has decades of experience with brick slip cladding and routinely offers some of the most beautiful and durable brick slips you will find anywhere. The benefits of brick slip cladding are many and include:

  • Structural Reinforcement: Brick slips not only look great but they also work to buttress the structural integrity of a building. And a more structurally sound building will provide greater resistance to eventual cracking of the render. Brick slips can also make a building more resistant to humidity which in turn will enable it to resist harbouring mould and algae. Finally, a brick slip rendering will minimise damage caused by airborne pollutants.
  • Low Maintenance: Typically a brick slip render requires much less in the way of long-term maintenance when compared to other render options. In most cases all that’s needed to keep a Licata brick slip render looking fresh is the occasional washing.
  • They Look Great: Licata brick slip renders are available in a multitude of colours to match your aesthetic needs including ruby, autumn, mustard, toffee, apricot, sunset and many more. By introducing bright, textured brick slips onto the face of a structure you can activate its appearance and vastly increase its kerb appeal. All while seeming indistinguishable from standard bricks.
  • Enhanced Insulation: To some degree all of our render systems will enhance the insulation capabilities of a structure, but none more so than a brick slip render. Exactly how much will depend on the brick slip that is chosen, since they have different levels of thickness. A brick slip finish will have the added benefit of reducing noise from the outside. Not only making the building cheaper to heat and cool, but quieter as well.

Coloured Render System

The coloured render has the colour blended right into it. Therefore no matter how long it is exposed to the environment it will always retain its fresh, attractive look. Here are some of the other advantages of a coloured render finish:

  • Versatility: Licata coloured render finishes are available in more than 700 colours. There is simply no way you will not be able to find one that dovetails with your specific needs.
  • A Variety of Textures: Our coloured render systems are available in a variety of textures ranging from smooth to quite coarse. Whatever texture you are after you’ll be able to achieve it with a coloured render.
  • Greater Durability: A Licata coloured render is on average some 20 times thicker than paint. It will not succumb to even the harshest conditions such as those found in coastal areas.
  • Mould and Algae Resistant: By their chemical composition Licata coloured renders are resistant to the type of algae and mould that can cause all manner of respiratory distress.
  • Will Not Flake or Peel: Due to its thickness and the fact that the colour is infused throughout the render it will never flake or peel like paint ensuring it always looks great.

Multi-Coloured Render

Finally, the multi-coloured resin finish is typically indicated for use on both internal and external  substrates as well as on existing residential and commercial structures. Here are some of the benefits of a multi-colour resin finish:

  • High Resistance to Abrasion: Our multi-colour resin finish is formulated from a base of ceramic grains. This gives the finish an excellent level of resistance to abrasion.
  • High Resistance to Weathering: Our multi-colour resin formulation provides near total protection from airborne pollutants and weathering agents by creating an unbroken skin that, among other things, repels rainwater.
  • A High Degree of Workability: Our multi-coloured resin finish provides outstanding workability as well as excellent adhesion to virtually any substrate.
  • High Aesthetic Value: Due to its meticulous formulation and careful mixing of the ceramic grains that form its base a multi-colour render enables plurocromatic finishes that exhibit an extremely high aesthetic quality.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, you can render directly onto thermalite blocks when the right render system is used. At Licata, our thermalite blocks render is designed for this specific substrate, providing excellent adhesion and durability while ensuring long-term crack resistance.

Before applying render, the surface should be clean and free of dust or damp. Using a bonding agent such as an SBR slurry can help create a reliable key for the first coat, making the system more suitable for both residential and commercial building projects.

Thermalite blocks are lightweight and porous, so priming is often recommended to ensure a strong bond. A suitable primer helps regulate suction and prepares the substrate for the scratch coat, which is an essential step in the process of rendering thermalite blocks.

At Licata, we supply primers designed for this purpose, ensuring the render mix adheres smoothly to the surface. This preparation avoids issues like cracking and helps the finish coat achieve both strength and a fine texture.

When installed correctly with the right basecoat, scratch coat and finish coat, thermalite blocks render can last for decades. Licata render systems are BBA certified and come with warranties of up to 25 years, giving long-term peace of mind.

The durability comes from quality materials and the process of applying render in two coats. With proper care and occasional cleaning, the system will continue to protect the building walls while maintaining its colour and texture.

Yes, using a professional thermalite blocks render system can improve energy performance. By forming a protective layer on the blocks, it reduces heat loss, supports better insulation and helps create a more comfortable indoor environment.

Our systems allow you to choose between finishes such as coloured render, silicone finishes or multi-colour options. Each is designed to resist damp and cracking, while supporting the building fabric with both strength and smooth aesthetics.

Preventing cracking starts with the right preparation and materials. A bonding agent or SBR slurry can be used on the substrate to strengthen adhesion. The first coat should be applied evenly as a scratch coat, followed by a second coat or finish coat once the surface has set.

Using the correct render mix with lime, sharp sand or specialist basecoats ensures flexibility and durability. At Licata, our render system is reinforced with mesh to create extra crack resistance, allowing walls built with thermalite blocks to remain stable and long-lasting.
