Features & Benefits

Why specify Romana Specular polished lime plaster?

Ultra-Fine Polished Lime Plaster

Micronised materials with a particle size below 0.1mm allow this polished lime plaster to achieve ultra-flat, smooth and truly specular surface finishes — the level of precision required for high-end decorative interior work.

🌬️

Highly Transpiring

Despite its ultra-fine finish, this polished lime plaster remains highly breathable — making it ideal as the final layer over dehumidifying plaster systems and on older buildings where vapour permeability is essential.

🌿

Eco-Friendly Natural Formulation

Part of the Licata Naturalis line — this polished lime plaster uses natural hydraulic lime and natural materials, making it the appropriate choice for eco-sensitive, sustainable and heritage renovation projects.

⏱️

Exceptional Working Time

A workability time of up to 240 minutes at 20°C — extendable to 24–48 hours if hermetically stored and restirred — gives plasterers the time needed to achieve precision polished lime plaster finishes on complex surfaces.

🏛️

Historically Compatible

Based on natural hydraulic lime and traditional raw materials — this polished lime plaster is historically compatible and suitable for use on listed buildings and conservation area properties alongside other Naturalis system products.

🔒

Crack Resistant

Excellent dimensional stability and slow lime integration prevent cracks and fissures in the finished polished lime plaster surface — even at the ultra-fine thicknesses at which this product is applied.

Product Description

Romana Specular — Ultra-Fine Polished Lime Plaster

Romana Specular is Licata's ultra-fine polished lime plaster — an eco-friendly, transpiring finish based on natural hydraulic lime, part of the Licata Naturalis line. The micronised materials with particle size below 0.1mm make it unique in the range — capable of producing ultra-flat, smooth and specular surface finishes that would be impossible to achieve with standard lime render products.

This polished lime plaster is applied in two or three very thin coats with a total thickness not exceeding 2mm — making it a precision finishing product rather than a basecoat or structural render. The exceptionally long working time of up to 240 minutes (or 24–48 hours if hermetically stored) gives applicators the flexibility needed for high-quality decorative work.

Romana Specular polished lime plaster sits at the top of the Licata Naturalis system — applied over Romana Intonaco lime basecoat or Storica Deumidificante dehumidifying plaster. It is also suitable as a standalone decorative finish on any lime or cement-based substrate.

Supported Substrates

Polished lime plaster compatible substrates

Aerial lime based plasters
Hydraulic lime based plasters
Lime/cement based plasters

Always prime to even out absorption before applying this polished lime plaster. For dehumidifying cycles, apply over Storica Deumidificante or Romana Intonaco. The substrate must be fully cured, flat and cohesive.

In the Naturalis System
Romana Specular is the final decorative coat in the Licata Naturalis lime render system — applied over Romana Intonaco lime basecoat or Storica Deumidificante dehumidifying plaster in full renovation cycles.

Preparation & Mixing

Preparing Romana Specular polished lime plaster

1
Substrate preparation: The substrate must be fully cured, clean, flat and cohesive. Always prime to even out absorption before applying the polished lime plaster. Resolve any capillary or saline rise with Neutral Antisale or Injecto Gel before the basecoat.
2
Mixing: Pour the polished lime plaster into a container with three quarters of the mixing water. Mix for 3–4 minutes at low speed until a smooth, lump-free thixotropic mixture is achieved. Rest for 1–2 minutes then stir again before use.
3
Extended use: If stored hermetically, the mixed polished lime plaster can be kept for 24–48 hours — simply restir before use. Do not add more water after initial mixing.
Application

Achieving the polished lime plaster finish

1
Moisten the substrate: Dampen the substrate before applying the first coat of polished lime plaster.
2
Apply by hand: Spread the polished lime plaster by hand using a stainless steel spatula — not by machine. The precision required for a specular finish demands hand application throughout.
3
Multiple coats: Apply two or three coats spaced approximately 24 hours apart. The total thickness of the polished lime plaster finish must not exceed 2mm — this is a precision finishing product, not a build-up coat.
4
Final coat: Finish the last layer with a stainless steel spatula — burnishing the surface to achieve the characteristic smooth, uniform and specular finish of this polished lime plaster.
Important: Always check colour and appearance before application — claims will not be accepted once applied. Protect fresh polished lime plaster from rain, wind and direct sunlight for at least 48–72 hours. Temperature must be between +5°C and +35°C throughout application and drying.
