Features & Benefits

Why specify Romana Intonaco lime basecoat?

🌬️

Highly Transpiring Lime Basecoat

The very high vapour permeability of this lime basecoat makes it ideal as a porous plaster in dehumidifying cycles — allowing moisture to escape freely from the wall while protecting the substrate.

🏛️

Historically Compatible

Formulated with NHL 5 natural hydraulic lime and traditional raw materials — this lime basecoat is historically compatible with old, heritage and solid wall properties where modern cement-based products are unsuitable.

🌿

Eco-Friendly Formulation

Part of the Licata Naturalis range — an eco-friendly lime basecoat system using natural, biocompatible materials suited to sustainable construction and renovation projects.

💪

Fibre-Reinforced

Fibre reinforcement within the lime basecoat formulation improves impact resistance and crack resistance — providing a more durable base for subsequent lime render and finish coats.

Smooth & Easy to Apply

The smooth, soft consistency of this lime basecoat allows both precise and deliberately rustic applications — suitable for machine or manual application on all types of renovation substrate.

⏱️

Long Working Time

A workability time of over 180 minutes at 20°C gives applicators ample time to achieve a consistent, even finish — particularly important on large or complex renovation facades.

Product Description

Romana Intonaco — Lime Basecoat for Renovation

Romana Intonaco is Licata's eco-friendly lime basecoat for renovation — a transpiring, fibre-reinforced plaster based on Roman lime with NHL 5 hydraulic lime. This lime basecoat is the first layer in the Licata Naturalis system, applied before subsequent lime render and finish coats in environmentally friendly renovation cycles.

The high transpiration properties of this lime basecoat make it ideal as a porous plaster in dehumidifying cycles — helping to manage moisture in older properties where trapped damp is a problem. The historically compatible formulation using traditional raw materials makes it the correct choice for heritage, listed and conservation area properties.

This lime basecoat can be applied by hand or machine in thicknesses of 6–20mm per coat. For thicknesses above 20mm, additional coats should be applied with at least one day between each, ensuring the previous coat is roughened before the next is applied.

Mixing

How to mix Romana Intonaco lime basecoat

1
Substrate preparation: The substrate must be cured, clean, flat, cohesive and free of any release agents. Always use a primer to even out absorption before applying this lime basecoat. Resolve any capillary or saline rise in advance.
2
Mixing: Pour the lime basecoat into a clean container with three quarters of the mixing water. Mix for 3–4 minutes at low speed with a mixer, gradually adding remaining water until a smooth, lump-free thixotropic mixture is achieved.
3
Rest and remix: Leave the mixed lime basecoat to rest for 1–2 minutes then stir again before use. Use only clean water — do not split bags for partial mixing.
Application

Applying the lime basecoat

1
Moisten the substrate: Dampen the substrate before applying this lime basecoat to extend working time and improve adhesion.
2
Manual application: Apply a first roughing coat by trowel to completely cover the surface and provide a key for subsequent layers. For machine application, work from the bottom up.
3
Thickness and levelling: Apply the lime basecoat at 6–20mm per coat. Level with a straight edge or knife using horizontal and vertical passes until a flat, even surface is achieved.
4
Multiple coats: For total thicknesses above 20mm, apply additional coats allowing at least one day between each. Roughen the previous coat with a hard grout trowel before applying the next layer of lime basecoat.
Important: Protect the fresh lime basecoat from rain, wind and direct sunlight for at least 48–72 hours after application. Do not apply on icy surfaces or in fog or excessive humidity. Temperature must be between +5°C and +35°C throughout application and drying.
