Idrosil Exterior - Silicate Paint

Mineral exterior silicate paint — ultra-matt, highly breathable, odourless, DIN 18363 compliant

Idrosil Exterior Silicate Paint by Licata

Idrosil Exterior is a mineral exterior silicate paint from Licata — a micro-coating based on potassium silicates in aqueous dispersion and siliceous aggregates, compliant with DIN 18363. This silicate paint bonds chemically with the mineral substrate through natural silicatisation, combining exceptional vapour permeability with excellent water repellency. Mineral, odourless and ultra-low VOC — ideal for decorating new façades or restoring existing ones. Pigmentable to a wide range of colours.

Features & Benefits

Why specify Idrosil Exterior silicate paint?

Silicatisation — Chemical Bond with Substrate

Idrosil Exterior silicate paint does not just adhere to the substrate — it reacts chemically with the mineral surface through a natural process called silicatisation. This creates an insoluble bond that does not peel, blister or flake over time in the way organic paints can.

Very High Breathability

The potassium silicate base gives Idrosil Exterior exceptional vapour permeability — moisture moves freely out through the wall, preventing the trapped damp and interstitial condensation that causes organic paints to fail on breathable mineral substrates.

Water Repellent

Despite its high breathability, Idrosil Exterior repels liquid water — keeping rain off the façade whilst allowing water vapour to pass freely from inside to outside. Excellent whiteness is maintained even in exposed conditions.

Mineral, Odourless & Ultra-Low VOC

A truly mineral product — inorganic binders, odourless formulation and VOC content below 30g/L (DIN 18363, Cat A/c). Ideal for occupied buildings and sensitive environments where low-emission products are specified.

Pigmentable — Wide Colour Range

Idrosil Exterior silicate paint can be pigmented to the majority of colours in the licatasystemcolors EXTERIOR swatch — supplied in white and tinted to order. The ultra-matt finish delivers a natural, high-quality decorative result.

Versatile Application

The fine granulometry (<100 microns) means Idrosil Exterior silicate paint can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray — giving applicators full flexibility on site regardless of substrate type or access conditions.

Product Description

Idrosil Exterior — Mineral Silicate Paint

Idrosil Exterior is Licata's mineral exterior silicate paint — a micro-coating based on potassium silicates in aqueous dispersion and siliceous aggregates, compliant with DIN 18363 regarding the purity of silicates. It combines high adhesion through chemical silicatisation with very high vapour permeability, making it ideal for both new build façade decoration and the aesthetic restoration of existing mineral surfaces.

As a fully mineral product, Idrosil Exterior silicate paint is odourless and ultra-low VOC — well within the requirements of European Directive 2004/42/EC for external wall coatings (Cat A/c, <30g/L). The ultra-matt finish and excellent whiteness give a natural, high-quality decorative result across the full licatasystemcolors EXTERIOR colour range.

Primer selection is important — apply Sil Primer on new or particularly absorbent substrates, and Primer Ocram when overpainting medium or strong existing colours. Both primers are designed to work as coupling bridges for silicate decorative coatings.

Recommended Primers
Sil Primer — new or absorbent substrates  ·  Primer Ocram — overpainting medium/strong colours
Compatible Substrates

Where to use this silicate paint

Lime-based civil finishing plasters
Cement-based civil finishing plasters
Gypsum (prime first if very low absorption)
Existing painted surfaces (check and clean thoroughly)
Concrete

Apply to cured substrates only — minimum 4 weeks. For substrates with existing organic paint, always apply Sil Primer or Primer Ocram as a coupling bridge before this silicate paint.

Application — Dilution Rates
Brush or roller: 25% water 1st coat, 20% 2nd coat  ·  Airless: 25%  ·  Minimum 3 hours between coats

Preparation

Preparing for silicate paint application

1
Substrate preparation: Remove all flaking or detaching areas mechanically. Repair minor areas with suitable Licata repair products and restore flatness. Clean all surfaces of dust, detergents, oils and mineral greases.
2
Priming: Apply Sil Primer on new or particularly absorbent substrates. Apply Primer Ocram when overpainting existing surfaces with medium or strong colours. On surfaces with organic paint, always apply one of these primers as a coupling bridge.
3
Mixing and dilution: Dilute with clean water — 25% for the first coat by brush/roller or for airless application, 20% for the second coat by brush/roller. Mix for a few minutes with a mixer whisk until smooth before applying.
4
Check conditions: Confirm ambient, substrate and product temperatures are between +5°C and +35°C with maximum 70% relative humidity. Do not apply on wet, icy or frost-affected substrates or on walls in direct sunlight.
Application

Applying Idrosil Exterior silicate paint

1
Apply in two or more cross-over coats: Apply by brush, roller or airless spray in successive cross-over layers for perfect coverage and a uniform finish. Allow at least 3 hours between coats at 20°C.
2
Monitor drying on absorbent surfaces: Highly absorbent substrates or unfavourable conditions (strong draughts, high temperatures) can significantly reduce open time. Constantly check that a surface film does not form prematurely.
3
Protect from direct sun during drying: Provide adequate shielding on sun-exposed surfaces during application and initial drying. Protect the fresh silicate paint from rain, wind and direct sunlight for the first 48–72 hours.
4
Check colour before applying: Always verify that the colour matches what was specified before application begins. No claims regarding colour shade will be accepted once the silicate paint has been applied.
Do not apply on frozen, thawing or wet substrates, or on walls in direct sunlight. Temperature must be between +5°C and +35°C. Protect eyes and hands during application. Clean tools with water immediately after use.
