Colorado Spugnato is a decorative lime render finish from Licata — pigmentable, eco-friendly and highly transpiring, based on hydrated lime with NHL 5 natural hydraulic lime. This lime render finish delivers a pleasantly wavy, textured appearance and can be supplied white or coloured with UV-resistant metal pigments. Suitable for any surface requiring a water-resistant, breathable decorative finish — indoors or outdoors.

Colorado Spugnato — Decorative Lime Render Finish

Colorado Spugnato is Licata's decorative lime render finish — a pigmentable, eco-friendly and transpiring plaster based on hydrated lime. Part of the Licata Naturalis line, this lime render finish is applied as the final decorative coat in environmentally friendly renovation cycles — including as the finishing layer over Storica Deumidificante dehumidifying plaster in full dehumidifying system applications.

The distinctive character of this lime render finish comes from its application technique — the sponge float creates a pleasantly wavy, textured appearance that is characteristic of traditional hydrated lime work. Excellent dimensional stability and slow lime integration prevent cracks and fissures, giving a durable finish that maintains its appearance over time.

Colorado Spugnato lime render finish is applied in two coats — the second coat is worked with a sponge float to achieve the characteristic texture. For a more prominent shaded aged effect, slightly wet the surface during application. For a smoother, more uniform finish, an electric trowel can be used on the second coat instead.

Always prime the substrate to even out absorption before applying this lime render finish. For dehumidifying cycles, apply over Storica Deumidificante or Romana Intonaco basecoat. Resolve any capillary or saline rise with Neutral Antisale or Injecto Gel before the basecoat is applied.

Preparation & Mixing

Preparing Colorado Spugnato lime render finish

Substrate preparation: The substrate must be fully cured, clean, flat and cohesive. Always prime to even out absorption before applying this lime render finish. Resolve any capillary or saline rise in advance.

Mixing: Pour the lime render finish into a clean container with three quarters of the mixing water. Mix for 3–4 minutes at low speed until a smooth, lump-free thixotropic mixture is achieved. Use only clean water — do not split bags for partial mixing.

Moisten the substrate: Dampen the substrate before applying the first coat of lime render finish.

Application

Applying the lime render finish

First coat: Apply the lime render finish with a stainless steel American spatula in a thin, even first coat.

Second coat: Apply the second coat after an interval of 4–24 hours. Finish with a sponge float, working it like a normal civil plaster to create the characteristic wavy texture of this lime render finish.

Aged effect: To enhance the light/dark shaded effect, lightly wet the surface with a sponge trowel during application — this gives the lime render finish a more pronounced aged appearance.

Smooth finish alternative: For a smoother surface with a more pronounced shaded effect, crush the second coat with a stainless steel spatula immediately after trowel application. For a more homogeneous colour, apply a compatible paint in the same shade over the dried lime render finish.

Important: Always check colour, texture and appearance before application — claims will not be accepted once applied. Protect the fresh lime render finish from rain, wind and direct sunlight for at least 48–72 hours. Temperature must be between +5°C and +35°C.
