BetonFIP Passivante — Reinforcement Bar Passivating Coating

Single-component, polymer-modified cementitious passivating coating for the protection and passivation of reinforcement bars in concrete structures — CE marked to UNI EN 1504-7

BetonFIP Passivante reinforcement bar passivating coating by Licata

BetonFIP Passivante is a single-component, polymer-modified cementitious passivating coating containing corrosion inhibitors, green in colour. It eliminates the risk of corrosion in exposed reinforcement bars — the most common cause of deterioration in concrete structures — and protects bars with insufficient concrete cover, extending the service life of the structure.

Certified UNI EN 1504-7 — Reinforcement Protection CE Marked — System 2+ Certificate No. 1305-CPR-1156 Corrosion Resistant pH ≥ 12
Features & Benefits

Why specify BetonFIP Passivante reinforcement passivating coating?

🏅

CE Marked to UNI EN 1504-7

BetonFIP Passivante is CE marked under attestation system 2+ (Certificate No. 1305-CPR-1156) and fully complies with the requirements and acceptance limits of UNI EN 1504 Part 7 — the European standard for reinforcement protection in concrete repair.

🛡️

Prevents Reinforcement Corrosion

Corrosion of reinforcement bars is the most common cause of concrete structure deterioration. BetonFIP Passivante eliminates this risk by maintaining bars in a high pH environment — an essential condition for preventing steel corrosion.

⚗️

Contains Corrosion Inhibitors

The formulation incorporates active corrosion inhibitors alongside polymer modification, providing chemical protection to the reinforcement bar surface and maintaining the passivation layer over the service life of the repair.

🔬

High pH Environment

BetonFIP Passivante maintains a pH of ≥12 at the reinforcement bar surface — replicating the alkaline environment of sound concrete and chemically passivating the steel to halt the corrosion process.

💪

Strong Adhesion to Concrete

Achieves adhesion to concrete of ≥2 MPa in accordance with UNI EN 1542, ensuring the passivating coating bonds reliably to the prepared substrate and maintains integrity under the repair mortar overcoat.

⚡

Fast Overcoating — 2 Hours

BetonFIP Passivante can be overcoated with repair mortars from the BetonFIP range after just 2 hours at 20°C, minimising waiting time on site and keeping concrete repair programmes on schedule.

Product Description

BetonFIP Passivante — Cementitious Passivating Coating

BetonFIP Passivante is Licata's single-component, polymer-modified cementitious passivating coating for the protection of reinforcement bars against corrosion. Green in colour for easy identification on site, it contains active corrosion inhibitors and is designed to maintain steel reinforcement in the high pH environment necessary to prevent corrosion from taking hold.

Applied to exposed reinforcement bars by brush in two coats to achieve a total thickness of approximately 2mm, BetonFIP Passivante forms a chemically active protective layer before the repair mortar is applied. It is equally suited to bars with insufficient concrete cover, where it provides direct corrosion protection and extends the service life of the structure.

BetonFIP Passivante is compatible with the full BetonFIP range of repair mortars and can be overcoated with them from 2 hours after application at 20°C. It is CE marked under attestation system 2+ and complies in full with UNI EN 1504 Part 7.

Preparation & Mixing

Preparing BetonFIP Passivante

1
Rust removal: After hydro-demolition, reinforcement bars must be perfectly clean and free from oxidation. Where deteriorated concrete has been removed mechanically, remove all rust by sandblasting, hydro-sandblasting, or mechanical wire brushing before application.
2
Temperature check: Before mixing, confirm that both ambient and substrate temperatures are between +5°C and +35°C. Do not mix or apply outside this range. Note that drying time is slower at lower temperatures.
3
Mixing: Mix using a low-speed electric paddle mixer. Add approximately 1.2–1.3 litres of water per 5kg bag (24–26%). Mix until a homogeneous, lump-free consistency is achieved. Never exceed the maximum prescribed amount of water.
Application

Applying the passivating coating

1
First coat: Apply BetonFIP Passivante by brush to all exposed reinforcement bar surfaces, achieving full coverage.
2
Drying between coats: Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 1 hour at 20°C before applying the second coat.
3
Second coat: Apply a second brush coat to achieve a total thickness of approximately 2mm. Ensure complete, even coverage of all bar surfaces.
4
Overcoating with repair mortar: BetonFIP Passivante can be overcoated with mortars from the BetonFIP range once hardened — approximately 2 hours after application at 20°C.
Note: Do not apply at temperatures below +5°C or above +35°C. Never exceed the maximum prescribed water content when mixing. The green colour of BetonFIP Passivante provides easy visual confirmation of coverage on site.
