FAQs
Is it okay to render a house in the rain?
Rendering a house in the rain – or if it is raining during the render’s drying period (typically 24 – 72 hours) – will usually ruin the render. Rain during application or curing can create textural issues, colour issues and even lime blooms. In the time leading up to the render both you and the contractor should keep an eye on the weather forecast. If rain is predicted to fall during application or drying then you should schedule a different time. Freezing weather can also negatively affect the outcome and should be avoided.
Can I render over my existing stone cladding?
In most cases the answer is “yes”. Exterior rendering is, in fact, often used to cover old stone and brick finishes. That said you should expect some challenges when rendering over existing brick or stone. For example, if the brick or stone is particularly bumpy you may have to apply an unusually thick layer of render material to achieve a flat, smooth finish. The best thing to do is to hire a contractor with plenty of experience rendering over stone and brick and let them do their thing.
Is planning permission required for exterior wall coatings?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It depends on whether or not the render process will fundamentally change the appearance of the house. If it will, you will probably need planning permission. In addition, if the house is a Listed Building you will almost certainly need planning permission. Ditto if your home is located in a Conservation Area such as a National Park. That said, for an average home if the render material will produce an appearance similar to the current appearance then the render may be considered “permitted development” and can proceed without planning permission.
Which lasts longer: an exterior paint job or a render?
A quality paint job can be expected to last about 6 or 7 years before it starts showing signs of age and will need to be repainted. A render on the other hand, particularly a colour-through render, will usually last 25-30 years before it needs to be redone. In some cases a bit longer.
