One of the best things about our silicone mineral renders is that they rarely need painting. The silicone-based coatings come in an extensive colour range with colour right through the thin coat finish, so you avoid constant brush work. Most silicone render systems go 20 years or more without repainting, making them genuinely low maintenance.

Mineral render performs similarly well because it’s typically applied in various colours with pigments mixed through. If you do refresh the look later, a breathable silicone paint is suitable for both render types, though with proper application over insulation boards or mineral wool, the original finish usually lasts decades.

Mineral render is usually more budget-friendly when you look at material costs ex vat. It’s often available as pre mixed or ready mixed product and performs brilliantly on concrete substrates and brick where water resistance matters. Silicone render costs more upfront because of the advanced silicone resin technology, but the highly flexible, crack resistant properties deliver long lasting performance that saves money over time.

When we discuss cost with customers, we always mention the full render system including primer, base coat, and mesh. The real difference comes down to the final thin coat finish and coverage needed. For external wall insulation projects, the price gap narrows when you factor in the comprehensive range of textures, grain sizes, and different colours available in both materials.

Silicone render dries to the touch within 12 to 24 hours depending on temperature and weather conditions, but full cure takes 7 to 14 days. This is especially true when applied over insulation systems like mineral wool or insulation boards. Rushing by painting or adding another coat too early can trap moisture and affect the crack resistant, water repellent finish.

Mineral renders cure faster because they’re cement-based and breathable, often achieving a solid durable finish within 3 to 7 days. If you’re mixing materials on site rather than using ready mixed options, curing time varies. At Licata, we always say let each layer cure properly, especially when building up a complete render system on external walls that face the elements.

You can apply both silicone and mineral render in winter, but temperature matters. For most of our silicone systems, we recommend working between 5°C and 25°C. Below that, the material won’t cure properly, affecting water resistance and crack resistant qualities. Mineral render is slightly more forgiving in colder conditions, but avoid applying if there’s frost or frozen surfaces.

The key is preparing the site and choosing the right time of day. If you’re working on a thin coat system over various surfaces like concrete or brick, make sure the substrate isn’t too cold and you’ve got decent drying conditions for 48 hours after. We’ve seen winter jobs done well with acrylic render or quartz aggregate finishes typically applied in one coat, but if the forecast looks rough, wait for a smooth, long lasting result rather than risk cracking.
