LicataTherm Mineral Wool EWI System

Mineral wool insulation has become a popular insulation material due to its many useful properties including the fact that it is easy to handle and that it is more affordable than some other types of insulation. But before we go any further let’s answer a basic question: what is mineral wool?

In case you are unfamiliar with it, mineral wool is fashioned from a type of spun yarn which itself is made from stone (typically molten volcanic rocks) or glass fibres. These threads of yarn are woven in a very specific way to create a wooly structure. This wooly material is then compressed into boards or batts to create an easy to work with form of insulation.

 At Licata we employ mineral wool as part of our EWI system. But that is far from the only use for this particular material. Various forms of mineral wool is:

• Used as thermal and acoustic insulation in walls and floors.
• Used to insulate attics to produce a more effective insulation profile for a home.
• Used to insulate both flat and pitched roofs.
• Used to insulate various types of industrial machinery such as air conditioners.
• Blown into wall cavities in timber frame strcutures to act as insulation (loose mineral wool only).

Mineral wool system provides several impressive benefits that make it a natural fit for our EWI cladding system. These include:

Mineral wool’s open fibre structure enables it to trap a large amount of air within, making it an ideal choice as an insulation product. Mineral wool’s lambda value (its thermal conductivity) is  0.03 W/mK to 0.04 W/mK, meaning it is not susceptible to thermal degradation. As a result it will maintain a stable level of thermal performance for as long as it is in place.

Because it is fashioned from glass or stone mineral wool insulation displays impressive fire resistance and does not abide excess heat. As such it is ideal for environments where there is a high priority on fire safety, such as residential and commercial structures. While we employ it as part of our EWI cladding system it is also employed to create a range of other fireproof products which need to withstand temperatures that would render other insulation materials useless, including fireproof doors, fireproof partition walls and ceilings and various types of fireproof clothing. Mineral wool is classified as a Euro Class A material and has the best fire safety score of all insulation materials.

Many types of insulation compress or otherwise change shape over time, thereby compromising their effectiveness and eventually necessitating replacement. Not rockwool external wall insulation. Throughout its lifespan mineral wool neither shrinks nor expands, which contributes to the overall long-term effectiveness of our EWI cladding system.

Mineral wool does an outstanding job blocking noise pollution due to its structure. This helps the Licata EWI system contribute to a more energy-efficient structure, and one that is quieter as well. This outstanding ability to block sound waves also makes mineral wool an ideal choice for creating acoustic tiles for ceilings, floors and walls that need to absorb sound.
