Different Types of External Render Systems

Licata rendering systems are comprised of materials that have been continually refined over more than 50 years and which meet or exceed both BBA and ETA building material standards. Our most popular external rendering systems include:

Monocouche Rendering

A monocouche render is a single layer rendering system that seals your home or business against the elements, while keeping valuable heat indoors during the winter and excess heat outdoors during the summer. The monocouche render is through-coloured, meaning that no painting is necessary throughout its long life. Monocouche is French for “one coat” and that one coat can be easily applied using a render pump. The resulting render provides a clean, modern look in whatever colour you wish.

Plaster Rendering

If it’s choice that floats your boat you are going to love our colour rendering systems. We provide more than 700 colours to choose from so no matter what colour your home or business you will find one that suits your needs and tastes to a T.

Through colour rendering for Dartford homes does not have to be painted after it’s applied, nor will the colour peel, crack or chip. This makes our colour render system extremely easy to install and slashes long term maintenance costs to almost zero. Our colour renders are also hydrophobic, breathable and flexible.

Thin Coat Rendering

Thin coat renders may be silicon, acrylic or mineral. Silicone tends to be the most popular due to its longevity, ease of application and stout water resistance. Acrylic, however, is not far behind and is prized for its flexibility, which is crucial for older homes. And mineral thin coats are typically the go-to choice for homes in cold areas due to their rugged profile and quick drying.

Benefits of Insulated Rendering and Plaster Rendering

Insulated Renders

One of the most insidious forces working against your home is temperature. As temperatures rise and fall the materials that make up your home expand and contract. Over time this expansion and contraction undermines the integrity of the home and shortens its life.

An insulated render from Licata can arrest this process by stabilising the temperatures experienced by the external walls. Installing this type of wall insulation is, however, considered a specialist task and should only be performed by a qualified contractor using BBA certified materials.

Plaster Renders

Plaster rendering in Dartford is still quite common in spite of the rise of extremely durable synthetic based materials. Why? Because few things can match the versatility of the plaster render. A plaster render can be applied to a wide variety of substrates with equal effectiveness. The finish can also be worked in myriad ways to satisfy design requirements, and our plaster renders are available in myriad colours. Plaster renders will not weigh down a wall, nor will they trap moisture.

FAQs

Why is the process called “rendering”?

No one seems quite sure exactly why the term was chosen to represent the process of applying a waterproof or insulative coating to the exterior of a home or business. Ask a dozen different industry professionals and you’re likely to get a dozen different answers. One plausible explanation is that the word “render” can mean to convert something (in this case the exterior of a building) by means of process or treatment. So we’ll go with that.

What lasts longer: paint or rendering?

Exterior paint will typically last 6 or 7 years before it begins to lose its aesthetic value and needs to be repainted. A render, on the other hand, will often last as much as 25 or 30 years before it needs to be redone while retaining its aesthetic appeal. Keep in mind too that paint will not produce the same degree of coverage a render will and so is likely to allow rain to penetrate through small gaps in the coverage.

Is it possible for a render to fail?

While it is not at all common it is possible for a render to fail. There are two main culprits behind a failed render: one is the DIY render, and the other is the render being exposed to inclement weather during the curing process. Remember, depending on the type of render it may take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours for it to set properly. If right after applying the render the temperature drops significantly, or heavy rain begins to fall it is likely the render will fail and begin flaking away.

Is rendering for new and existing buildings expensive?

A render will cost more than a paint job, certainly. At the same time though the render will produce benefits that paint simply cannot. For example, painting the exterior of a home does little if anything in terms of insulating the house. Coloured rendering, by comparison, is essentially adding a new layer of insulation to the outside of your home and will make it quantifiably warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Also, while some exterior house paints are nominally water-resistant they are nowhere near as hydrophobic as a render, nor will they last anywhere near as long.
