FAQs
Why is the process called “rendering”?
No one seems quite sure exactly why the term was chosen to represent the process of applying a waterproof or insulative coating to the exterior of a home or business. Ask a dozen different industry professionals and you’re likely to get a dozen different answers. One plausible explanation is that the word “render” can mean to convert something (in this case the exterior of a building) by means of process or treatment. So we’ll go with that.
What lasts longer: paint or rendering?
Exterior paint will typically last 6 or 7 years before it begins to lose its aesthetic value and needs to be repainted. A render, on the other hand, will often last as much as 25 or 30 years before it needs to be redone while retaining its aesthetic appeal. Keep in mind too that paint will not produce the same degree of coverage a render will and so is likely to allow rain to penetrate through small gaps in the coverage.
Is it possible for a render to fail?
While it is not at all common it is possible for a render to fail. There are two main culprits behind a failed render: one is the DIY render, and the other is the render being exposed to inclement weather during the curing process. Remember, depending on the type of render it may take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours for it to set properly. If right after applying the render the temperature drops significantly, or heavy rain begins to fall it is likely the render will fail and begin flaking away.
Is rendering for new and existing buildings expensive?
A render will cost more than a paint job, certainly. At the same time though the render will produce benefits that paint simply cannot. For example, painting the exterior of a home does little if anything in terms of insulating the house. Coloured rendering, by comparison, is essentially adding a new layer of insulation to the outside of your home and will make it quantifiably warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Also, while some exterior house paints are nominally water-resistant they are nowhere near as hydrophobic as a render, nor will they last anywhere near as long.
