FAQs
Is it really necessary to hire a contractor to perform exterior rendering?
If you want to ensure the job is done right then, yes. Keep in mind too that contractors are insured, so if anything goes wrong with the render you’re covered. If you do the render yourself and make mistakes you will take the financial hit that comes with removing the render and starting over. Obtaining the desired finish, whether that is smooth or textured, is also something that takes practice and experience. It is possible you may achieve exactly what you’re after if you DIY the render, but the truth is it’s not likely. Leave it to the pros.
My house has a major problem with moisture. Can a render help?
The UK is one of the dampest countries on earth. And while that’s great for creating a lush, green environment all that moisture is not good for homes. And that’s been the case since the first dwellings were built in the British Isles. A professionally applied render from Licata is one of the best known ways to prevent penetrating exterior walls. At the same time most of our renders are highly breathable so any moisture that does penetrate does not get stuck behind the render layer.
Can a render be applied in any weather?
There are two primary reasons why problems arise with renders. The first is the DIY application. The second is that shortly after the render is applied it is exposed to heavy rain and/or freezing temperatures. Keep in mind that renders typically take anywhere from 24-72 hours to set (depending on the type of render). If they are exposed to hostile weather during the curing process the render is likely to fail. Ideally, renders should be applied during periods of warm, dry weather.
Can a new render be applied over an existing render?
We would strongly recommend against applying a new render over an existing render. That’s because the new render is unlikely to adhere properly to the old render, with the result being a cracked render that falls away not long after being applied.
